Hi Everyone ...
I'm hanging out here for a bit because Raven and others here are brilliant and by osmosis I hope to learn more.
In the next couple of weeks I am preparing a presentation for general meeting of Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! in here in Victoria, BC. If they promote it, there could be a hundred webby-types out for the night and all talking about php-nuke.
So, I need input from the gurus. If you had an evening to talk about php-nuke what would you be sure to include? What questions might you expect from your audience? Anyone have a recent .ppt file perhaps?
My small city's history around computer-user groups is unique. It was through my old user group, BB&C, where I first learned to configure everything from PCBoard, Wildcat, Rosemail, QMail and on to UUCP. In those good old days I never programmed anything beyond batch files and config files. My desktop remained Windows. Learning Linux meant hanging out with the usergroup of kiddie boys and, as a 45 year old woman, that learning path wasn't going to happen. Perhaps my loss, but we move on.
Then I found and used, a really well done php-nuke website. I wanted one too. I dreamed of it replacing my old BBS and everything would be near perfect again. I knew I had to take the leap to server-side scripting, it was daunting! I had only heard of cgi/perl/asp/coldfusion/whatever. egad, mysql databases. Then I read that PHP could do anything, what the heck? might as well give it a go.
Panic rarely stops me from acting on desire and now, a year later, I have so many php-nuke sites ... I just can't keep track of them all. They've become like cats, and I'm constantly herding them.
One of them was just hacked again yesterday. Sheesh, drives me nutty but within a half day I'd had things pretty much under control and upgraded. Thank you Raven, for your 6.9 and logical helpful forums. Very well done indeed.
Anyways... the powerpoint presentation... I've got till Nov 19th to pull something together. So far I'm just rolling around a title: PHP-Nuke: History, Structure, Community. It would be some work, but I could throw up an example WEAV nuked site. I'll only have dial-up connection though.
I was a founding member of WEAV but I'm not a get out and go to meeting joiner and my membership languished for years. But today, out of desperation, I'm trying to find some breath of life in the local php community and php-nuke might be the way there. With my luck they'll all be 17 year old boys, again.
There doesn't seem to be much of a php-nuke community in Canada, and in my little way maybe I can change that.
Anyways... the powerpoint presentation... I've got till Nov 17th to pull something together. So far I'm just rolling around title: PHP-Nuke: History, Structure, Community.
Anyone have ideas/content/whatever to share? |

CodyG,
Would having temporary web space to throw together your WEAV site for the demo help you in any way? |

Hi Raven ... I've got lots of webspace so I'm fine there. I've even got an extra domain I can use. I wasn't too sure about the facility's connection to the internet, and yesterday I heard it was only dial up.
Anyways, I'm going to start some serious work on this project later today. |

Nuke stuff .... I love to talk about it. I don't care if all my friends and family go glassy eyed while I spin the stories of learning new tags, installing new versions of 6.5+ software, radminency issues, and angsting about themes.
Seems like I'm going through this upgrade to 6.9 process all backwards.
The following is what I've accomplished since Friday... (and a trip half way to Duncan for dinner and dancing... )
Nuke 6.9withRaven's fixes
Protection System
NSN Groups
Calendar/Birthday Block
Coppermine Photogallery
FriendFinder (with the age and other fixes finally released Oct 26 approx.) The production site FF db data, about 75 entries, is all setup and tested in the new db... and except for a detailed search function that won't work because I modified the search criteria in a few places ... and I'm still clueless about reg exps so there is a gaping broken bit I can't see. Users dont' need a detailed search function anyways.
Modules I've never installed but want to.. BuddyList. My users are going to love this module.
I'm using Deep Blue as default theme... so far so good. Co-sysop, as soon as she wakes up from her nap, is installing the more complex SpacePilot 3D 6.5+. Let's see what that does to my carefully crafted setup. Then I'll likely mod Deep Blue and make it Deep Pink.
I've still got a few miles of custom modules to re-install... ClearSky Clocks, Universe Today, Suggest a Survey, Newsletter and such, several html blocks to turn into block- files (hugs again Raven for sharing your knowledge), forums setup, some robot.txt files to review ...
The almost last thing I'll do is take the sql data export from the "6.0/withport production site" and finesse/brute force it into the new 6.9 db.
Also in this process I'm switching the domain from .org to .ca. (ya, maybe a zillion broken links, but the old .org can stay put for a little while and may still be there when nuke 8 needs to be installed.)
Can I put a redirect in the old meta.php file so any users bookmarked to whatever page at the old domain can get to the new domain?
I've thought some more about the nuke presentation and now plan to use the KISS principle ... and just demo an installation and setup.

I guess I'm talking to myself on this one ... but thought I'd update you with the link to the presentation "Installing PHP-Nuke." It is 30 or so slides, the visuals that accompany my talking.
I've still got time to make it better today and tomorrow. I'm thinking I might get a bit more details in on the structure of nuke... the language files for example.
The audience, Web Enthusiasts Association of Victoria, will have html knowledge and some of them will have programming skills.
Anyways, if you have comments, suggestions, or see a huge hole somewhere please let me know.

it all went very well. I just love that applause stuff.
The outcome of it all was a firm commitment by the group to begin a nuke sig in the New Year. Finally.
I use to think this was a fairly techy town, but how many of us use nuke or anything like it? It appears there is no one but me. |

Congratulations Cody! I know you put much effort into this as you do all of your sites. I certainly welcome your help here as you have time! |
