Is it possible to create a side block, (either on the left or right), but only have it show when a user is veiwing certain modules, (ie it is not visible on all pages of your website)?

I assumed that akin to the Yahoo IM icon taking you to a 'sign in' page when a person clicks it, the MSNM IM icon should also do the same.

Of course you are quite correct. As I do now see, modules/Forums/viewtopic.php is indeed a file I have, but the instructions only advised of viewtopic.php hence I was lost ...
